What works

Old Launcher - with minor workarounds:

- Fresh Installation

- Patching

Game Client - with minor workarounds

What does not

The new launcher continues to be an issue. The window will appear, but it will never finish loading the content inside the window.

The first time start-up cinematic does not load, you will be stuck at a loading screen after selecting a data center/hitting play and never progress to character selection/creation.

Workarounds

DXVK is installed and running for better D3D11 coverage.

Getting the old launcher:

  • Change the Browser value in ~/Documents/My Games/FINAL FANTASY XIV - A Realm Reborn/FFXIV_BOOT.cfg from 0 to 1 will give you the old browser. If you don't have this file yet, you can create it by starting the new launcher, or just make one in a text editor and place it in the prefix where you will be installing FFXIV.

A note about the old launcher: due to a won't-fix bug in IE, if you click on the red "Log-in" button after entering your account info you will get a javascript void error which crashes the launcher. You have to press enter after putting in your account info to get past it. You can click on the green "Play Now" button that appears at this point to launch the game client.

Skipping the First Time Start-Up Cinematic:

  • Change the CutsceneMovieOpening value to 1 in the ~/Documents/My Games/FINAL FANTASY XIV - A Realm Reborn/FFXIV.cfg file. You can make this file in a text editor and place it in the prefix where you will be installing FFXIV, or you can start up the game client.

What was not tested

32-bit Client (D3D9)

Hardware tested

Graphics:

  • GPU: Nvidia
  • Driver: proprietary

Additional Comments

The game does not require installation from scratch to work properly. You can copy an existing installation folder and run boot/ffxivboot.exe to start the launcher.

Mods (such as Gshade) can be installed in locations relative to where they would be in a Windows system for the game and will work just fine.

There is a random freezing bug that happens, but I am unsure if this is also an issue on Windows or not.

Version (and possibly title) of the application should probably be updated to Endwalker (6.0).

Otherwise, the game runs at near-native performance once the workarounds are implemented.

HowTo / Notes

HOWTO

The attractive new Launcher does not work, it will not load under Wine.

To use the old launcher.:

Edit FFXIV_BOOT.cfg:

Change Browser from 0 to 1

NOTE: Previously it was necessary to change the BrowserType setting, this is untouched now.

If you are having a problem with the launcher reporting you are not licenced to use this platform (or missing service license), the Launcher has mistaken Linux (no license available) for MacOS (separate license available). There is an option in the winecfg GUI on the Staging tab, tick the Hide Wine version from applications checkbox.

The opening cut scene still doesn't work, without disabling it you cannot progress to the character selection screen.

Edit FFXIV.cfg:

Change CutsceneMovieOpening from 0 to 1

It is no longer necessary to use a 32-bit wineprefix or install additional (winetricks) components. Apart from these two text file edits Final Fantasy XIV works out-of-the-box now.

For missing service license issues launching the game open winecfg (in your FF prefix) and on the Staging tab, tick the Hide Wine version from applications checkbox.

NB: After entering username and password it is essential to press Enter (on the keyboard) rather than clicking the button (with the mouse). If you are receiving a Javascript error using the Launcher this is essential.

If you find the official launcher too annoying, you can instead use an unofficial launcher called XIVLauncher. It runs flawlessly under Wine with "winetricks dotnet48". Its in-game plugin system (Dalamud) is currently broken under modern Wine versions and requires Wine 5.17 or earlier to function, but everything else works under any version of Wine.

And the day after I posted my test results, something changed and ffxivboot.exe doesn't work anymore it opens the new launcher.

ffxivboot64.exe works with the old launcher, but out of the box will complain about a missing service license under wine-staging. To fix this, open winecfg and on the Staging tab, tick the "Hide Wine version from applications" checkbox. After this, the old launcher should work correctly.
Prevent Old launcher startup registration

You can prevent startup registration in the old launcher by updating in FFXIV_BOOT.cfg,
from "StartupCompleted 0" to "StartupCompleted 1"
Additional tweaks for near Native performance (revised May 10 2020 test data)

Just as a heads up with Wine staging 5.17 and DXVK 1.7.1 I am seeing huge performance gains in FFXIV.
I went from 35-40fps max to 75-120fps, averaging about 90-100 in 4/8 man content.
My hardware is the same as my posted test data (3700X w/ PBO clocks and a 5700XT) and I am seeing nearly a 100% performance increase in most cases.

The original issue with my low performance in my test was found to be CSMT, but it was required to play the game due to rendering artifacts when it was not enabled.
Unable to launch game.

The launcher appears to be working...on a fresh install it prompts for the Registration Code. I enter this and it rejects the code as already registered (well, yeah).

I copied a ~/Documents/My Games/FINAL FANTASY XIV - A Realm Reborn/ folder from a previous, but no longer, working distro which causes the launcher to present the log in screen. I enter my Square Enix ID, Square Enix Pasword and One-Time Password (from the authenticator) and I'm presented with a new screen which informs me:
This service account does not have a valid FINAL FANTASY XIV licence for this platform or your subscription has expired...

Of course I do have a current subscription, as I can play on Windows, no issues.

You need to activate the option to hide wine version to program in winecfg. If you do not ff14 thinks you are playing on a mac and check for the mac license since they use wine for the mac version

Jerome, thank you!

I have never had to use this switch before with any game. However, FFXIV is running a treat again with Wine on Linux. I am very grateful to you thanks again!
Blank Launcher
by spaceman on Saturday November 16th 2019, 8:22
I built a fresh 32-bit wineprefix, installed xact with winetricks, tried downloading the Direct9 redistributable and installed that into the prefix.

Every time I start Final Fantasy, the Launcher opens up displaying the FFXIV Online graphic and does nothing else, goes no further.

I have set my ~/Documents/My Games/FINAL FANTASY XIV - A Realm Reborn/FFXIV_BOOT.cfg to
DX11Enabled 1
...
BrowserType 2

I have also tried other BrowserType values: 0,1,3.

Image below shows all I get:

Thank you.

Ignore "BrowserType" (keep it at 0), and set "Browser" to "1"; this will revert the launcher to the older one that works (mostly) fine (may have to press Enter instead of clicking Login)

Thanks Sean. I'm playing again, what more can I say.
