What works
In order to play the racing part, the graphics settings have to be set to "3D" and the patch 2 from http://www.lafix.de/index.php?id=51 has to be installed. (Needs to be installed for all NT-like systems: XP, Vista, 7, 10.)
After applying the patch, everything works as expected.
