What works

Installing (with workaround)

Launching (with workaround) any game that works on Windows 8.1 or less.

Anything else should work (buying games wad not tested)

What does not

Launching with Windows version set to Windows 10.

Text entry on the login screen only works if the winecfg option "Allow the windows manager to control the windows" is set. This is only needed once if the "remember me" option is ticked

Nothing works if the Launcher is minimised then restored, and the above winecfg option is set.

Copied from Noostyche's entry but with corrections:

The WINEPREFIX should be WINEARCH=win64
sudo apt install cabextract
sudo apt install winbind
winetricks corefonts

winetricks win81

wineserver -k

Install the Microsoft Visual C++ packages as listed at
wine msiexec /i ./EpicInstaller-unrealengine.msi.msi /q
First start: wine 'C:/Program Files (x86)/Epic Games/Launcher/Portal/Binaries/Win64/EpicGamesLauncher.exe' -SkipBuildPatchPrereq

It is necessary that the launcher has been updated without error SU-PQR1603. If the launcher is started without -SkipBuildPatchPrereq it will fail to start.

What was not tested

Buying games.

Hardware tested

  • GPU: Nvidia
  • Driver: proprietary

CLICK CANCEL when asked to install .NET or DirectX when first launching games
by Darren Wilkinson on Sunday November 17th 2019, 16:26
When you first launch a game after downloading many games will automatically start installing. NET and DirectX.

Unfortunately the .NET installation procedure fails under wine and installing DirectX messes with wine's own implementation. It is better to click cancel on these installers, and install .NET and DirectX/D3D libraries as needed via winetricks.

This is only needed the first time you click to launch a game.
