Fable: The Lost Chapters

Fable is a role-playingvideo game for Xbox, Mac OS X, and Windows platforms. It was developed by Big Blue Box, a satellite developer of Lionhead Studios, and was published by Microsoft.

Fable takes place in the fictional world of Albion. Players assume the role of an orphaned boy who realizes his dream of becoming a hero. The choices players make in the game affect the perception and reaction to their Hero by the characters of Albion, and change the Hero's appearance to mirror what good or evil deeds the Hero has performed. In addition to undertaking quests to learn what happened to the Hero's family, players can engage in optional quests and pursuits such as trading, romance, and theft.

Fable was expanded and rereleased as Fable: The Lost Chapters for Xbox and Windows PC platforms in September 2005. The game was later ported to Mac OS X by Feral Interactive.

The Lost Chapters features all the content found in the original Fable, as well as additional new content such as new monsters, weapons, alignment based spells, items, armor, towns, buildings, and expressions, as well as the ability to give children objects. The story receives further augmentation in the form of nine new areas and sixteen additional quests. Characters such as Briar Rose and Scythe, who played only minor roles in the original game, are now given more importance and are included in certain main and side quests.

What works

- Gameplay at max settings works fine.

- Changing settings while playing.

- The first level in Oakvale.

What does not

- Musics are not working, only ambient sounds and voices.

- In game videos and intros don't even launch, they are skipped by the game.

- The game just crashes at loading screen when you first enter the Guild, so any level after Oakvale is unplayable.

- The game isn't installable through the 4 CDs install without a trick.

Workarounds

The trick to install the game when you have 4 CDs is to copy all of the CD content into one folder and then launch the "autorun.exe" and it will install just fine.

Also you have to kill the process "IDriver.exe" because it will stay active even if the install is finished.

I think the game doesn't access correctly to the ISO drives you mount and thus rewards you with a "-2 error : file not available".

What was not tested

Longer gameplay due to the crash.

It really is a pity because it's a childhood game that I wanted to play without setting up a Windows VM. Guess anything doesn't always go as planned :-)

Used a clean Wine 32 bits prefix configured with Windows 7.

Installed the following : "winetricks mfc42 vcrun6 wmp9 devenum quartz" and all d3dx9.

Added csmt support with winetricks via the "Change settings" menu. (or you can type in console command "winetricks csmt=on").
