Fable: The Lost Chapters

Fable is a role-playingvideo game for Xbox, Mac OS X, and Windows platforms. It was developed by Big Blue Box, a satellite developer of Lionhead Studios, and was published by Microsoft.

Fable takes place in the fictional world of Albion. Players assume the role of an orphaned boy who realizes his dream of becoming a hero. The choices players make in the game affect the perception and reaction to their Hero by the characters of Albion, and change the Hero's appearance to mirror what good or evil deeds the Hero has performed. In addition to undertaking quests to learn what happened to the Hero's family, players can engage in optional quests and pursuits such as trading, romance, and theft.

Fable was expanded and rereleased as Fable: The Lost Chapters for Xbox and Windows PC platforms in September 2005. The game was later ported to Mac OS X by Feral Interactive.

The Lost Chapters features all the content found in the original Fable, as well as additional new content such as new monsters, weapons, alignment based spells, items, armor, towns, buildings, and expressions, as well as the ability to give children objects. The story receives further augmentation in the form of nine new areas and sixteen additional quests. Characters such as Briar Rose and Scythe, who played only minor roles in the original game, are now given more importance and are included in certain main and side quests.

What works

  • Gameplay
  • Various resolutions including 1680x1050
  • Music and sounds
  • All actor scripting
  • All quests.

What does not

  1. Pre-rendered video cutscenes are in the ugly WMV format and do not play in-game.

On the plus side, they contribute absolutely nothing to the game whatsoever anyway, so it's no great loss. On the negative side, when cutscenes are supposed to have played, both sound effects and music die. Sound can be restored by simply hitting 'Esc' and bringing up the menu. Music however can only be restored by saving and completely exiting and restarting the game.
    1. There are some nasty graphical artifacts which can mostly be worked around:
    • Shadows cause huge black artifacts, and must be completely disabled from the menu in order to make the game playable.
    • On my wife's system (with the same version of WINE) she sees visible seams in bodies of water, which does not detract from gameplay but is visually unappealing. Mine has no such artifact.
    • There is an upside-down tree artifact which appears periodically in the lower-left corner of the screen on both systems when using higher detail settings.
    • Head and facial hair sometimes shows white artifacts. Having a clean shaven character can work around this if it becomes distracting for you.
    •  Rain and snow effects are completely broken. The particles show up as grossly oversized and simply hang in mid-air, never falling.
    • Variable text, namely the bound hotkeys in-game, do not display correctly. They look like random garbled ASCII.

    Additional Comments

Installation was a bit tricky. After copying the install discs to my HDD, I was able to get the game installed normally. However, I had to throw a few 3rd-party libraries in system32 before I could get it installed and running correctly; namely mfc42.dll and d3dx9_25.dll Once installed, the game is fully playable from beginning to end. For that reason I want to give it between a very high silver and a very low gold rating. An interesting aside is that this game was not installable or playable whatsoever in commercial Cedega.
