What works

UIM.06 in Windowed mode with 24/32bit display and all graphical options turned up, except for 32bit textures.

Note that using the new full screen functionality in Mac OS X the game can be run full screen, even though the display options in the game launcher are set to windowed. Just click the "full screen" button at the top right of the Mac OS X window. In the loading screens the mouse pointer will need to be just below a button to select it, but the alignment is corrected as soon as the game starts.

To get the in-hangar menus to work correctly I had to use Winetricks to install devenum.dll, quartz.dll (not XQuartz), directplay and mono. IN THAT ORDER!

You have to have the first CD mounted in Mac OS X for the game to load. I haven't tried any no-cd patches.

What does not

The native full screen mode. Running in the native full screen mode causes the main menu to be overlaid onto the game.

32bit textures. This causes the colours to be scrambled.

It has been reported that If you use an ATI graphics card, the game may run unplayably slow. If this happens to you, please let us know in the comments section.

HOWTO Install Full Game From Demo (Without Movies)

Preparations

First, make sure you install the offical OpenGL drivers for your card (eg: nvidia-glx for nvidia cards). The game won't run otherwise. Also, in the Device section of your Xorg or XF86 configuration file, make sure you have Driver set to "nvidia".

Second, make sure you use a fairly recent version of Wine. The game will run with wine 0.9.2, but it crashes when a pilot takes you to a hangar. I recommend installing wine 0.9.5 or later.

Installing

Make sure you don't carry out the following steps as root.

1.

First of all, you need to download the Hardwar Demo here:
http://www.downloads.hardwar.info/demo/harddemo.zip

And the missingres here (optional):
http://www.downloads.hardwar.info/demo/missingres.exe

2.

Once you've downloaded these two files, you'll want to move harddemo.zip to your Program Files directory (you'll need the .wine directory first, run winecfg to create it) by issueing the following command (without quotes): "mkdir ~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/harddemo; mv harddemo.zip ~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/harddemo"

3.

Change directory (command is "cd directory", wihtout quotes) to your harddemo directory, and issue the follwing command (without quotes): "unzip harddemo.zip"

4.

Once you've done all that, open up winecfg by typing in winecfg, and add Hardman.exe as one of the applications. To do this, click on "Add application...", browse to your harddemo directory and double click on Hardman.exe. Change the Windows Version for Hardwar.exe to Windows 95. Once you've done that, run Hardwar.exe (wine Hardman.exe). If the installation doesn't work, repeat step 4 using setup.exe instead of Hardman.exe.

5.

There's one more file you have to download: the UIM06 patch. Download it here:http://www.downloads.hardwar.info/patch/ianmartin/uim06.zip
and put it in your harddemo directory. You should know how to do this by now.

Unzip it (issue the following command, without quotes: "unzip uim06.zip") and run the extracted file (wine HardwarUIM06.exe).

Playing the game

Note: Never, EVER run wine as root.

The UIM06 installer should have created a directory called Hardwar in your Program Files directory. You'll want to change directory to this directory and run: "wine Hardman.exe" without quotes to start the Hardwar manager.

When you start up the Hardwar Manager, click on the Display tab and set the resolution to something over 640x480. The game looks bad otherwise. Of course, if you don't want to change the resoloution to something over 640x480, that's fine.

You can set the game to 24/32 bit display if you want. You can do this by clicking the "24/32 bit display" checkbox in the Display box.

Set the game to windowed mode at your own peril.

Click on the Controls tab and change the controls to how you want them. It seems that the buttons are counted from 0 with joysticks, so button 0 in the controls configuartion window for joysticks is button 1 on your joystick.

Lastly, click on the Game tab, click on Launch game, select "Start a new world", save the game where you want it (I recommend saving it in the Hardwar directory), and click on Ok.

Have fun!
