HowTo / Notes

HOWTO

2013-05-03 Admin note: the instructions below are old and may not longer apply to current Wine. They are being left here for the benefit of anyone who may wish to test and/or update them.

How to install

Use the CD version (bundled with Sony Walkman players); the download version says the Windows version is not supported.

Newer Wine versions
NOTE: SonicStage does not run (last tested with Wine 1.1.3)

  • Install Windows Media Player 9, 98SE-2000 version
  • Start 'setup.exe' in the folder with your desired language in the 'SonicStage/ss/' subdirectory of the CD ('SetupSS.exe' in the root of the CD complains about Windows version not supported
  • Install the OpenMG secure module from the 'Common/OpenMG' directory on the CD

Wine version 0.9.10 and earlier

  • Install Windows Media Player (version 7.1 and newer should work; tested with 9)
  • Use the 'setup.exe' in the folder with your desired language in the 'SonicStage/ss/' subdirectory of the CD ('SetupSS.exe' in the root of the CD complains about Windows version not supported)
  • Install DCOM98 (WINEDLLOVERRIDES="ole32=n" wine DCOM98.EXE)
  • Install the OpenMG secure module from the 'Common/OpenMG' directory on the CD (the setup will hang when deleting temporary files after the installation; just close it when it does, and optionally remove C:\Config.Msi)
  • Run 'wineboot'
  • Install MDAC (Wine passes the Genuine Advantage test)
  • Install Jet
  • SonicStage may display message boxes that are covered by the splash-screen it displays while starting. To prevent this, change the settings in winecfg so that the window manager is not allowed to control Wine applications

Download SonicStage
f you do not have the CD, you can download the installation files for version 3.1, copied from the CD, here. You will need the following files

sonicstage-3.1-cd-ss-{desired language}.tar.bz2

sonicstage-3.1-cd-openmg.tar.bz2

WARNING
Playing music and doing other activities that re-draw the program opens a serious memory leak.
Native Alternative: linux-minidisc
Since SonicStage is discontinued by SONY you are recommended to change to the native alternative application QHiMDTransfer from the linux-minidisc-project (if your device is supported)
