What works
installation succeeds despite errors. Game seems fully playable (only played a scenario for a few minutes.) Sound, graphics all working.
No special start command as suggested by previous tester was needed. Started the game with the shortcut it created in the application launcher.
What does not
Once you alt-tab out, you can no longer get back in (game fails to restore full screen mode).
Workarounds
seems to require WINEARCH=win32. Game installed but did not run on a (default) 64 bit wineprefix.
Installed dotnet20 and d3dx9_29 with winetricks.
