What works
Played one level with an unmodified Wine prefix, then completed the rest of the game with DXVK.
What does not
When using Sway (a tiling WM which uses Wayland), the game crashes when switching workspaces. Fixed by enabling virtual desktop. Users of typical DEs shouldn't have this issue.
Workarounds
Enabled virtual desktop.
Installed DXVK using winetricks dxvk (current version is v1.7.2). This drastically improved the framerate on my (weak) hardware, with no noticeable changes in graphics.

Beating the game without DXVK.
