What does not
Movies. The game will hang on trying to play cinematics, but will curiously just skip in-battle animation files (for me, at least. No idea about others experiences.
What was not tested
Everything was tested.
I created a 32-bit Wine Prefix, as it is a 32-bit application. I set the Windows version to "Windows 98" because that is the Windows platform it was originally aimed at. I also enabled desktop emulation to 800x600, as it is fullscreen ONLY. It has no windowed mode, unfortunately. The game runs smoothly most times, except for slight periods where it runs jerkily, which is not often. For hanging cinematics, a quick jab of F9 will solve the problem. You will have to watch the cinematics outside of the game. They are .avi files, so you can play them with any media player. The game seems to consume a maximum of 100MB memory and 50% of the CPU, so it's a game that does not take much of a computer to run. This game shows the same performance regardless of whether I run it in the resource-intensive and game-unfriendly KDE environment or the super fast Openbox environment. To skip those pesky cinematics problems, pressing F9 will gracefully skip them and continue on.
When you initially run the Grandia2.exe file, the game screen will be black.
This is because of the UBI cinematic. Press F9. Problem solved.
Grandia 2 has a configuration utility called GmConfig.exe, found in the game folder. Here, you can change or/and memorise the game controls and modify the graphics settings.
The graphics options are quite simple.
The initial settings are 640x480 16-bit.
You would very likely want to change that to 1024x768 32-bit, for best quality.
