I have played through the first chapter along with some side quests, and all core gameplay features work without issue as far as I can tell.
What does not
When the window loses focus, the game glitches and freezes. It's not clear to me what is supposed to happen instead, and I don't have a Windows installation setup to verify how the application behaves in its native environment, but I think the game may be trying to minimize because a small icon sometimes appears that can be clicked which makes the application start running again.
To work around the issue with the window losing focus, use winecfg to configure Wine to emulate a virtual desktop. Set the virtual desktop dimensions to the resolution at which the game will be run.
Alternatively, run the game in a dedicated Xephyr display session with VirtualGL doing something like the following:
$ Xephyr :1 -ac -screen 1920x1080 &
$ DISPLAY=:1 WINEPREFIX=heroland/ vglrun wine start /unix heroland/drive_c/GOG\ Games/Heroland/HerolandLauncher.exe
By running the application in a Xephyr session as the only window, it never loses focus. VirtualGL is necessary to get GPU acceleration to work inside the Xephyr display. The 32-bit supplementary libraries for VirtualGL are required for this to work.
