What works

  • General UI.
  • About box.
  • Signing in.
  • Can download and view content when signed in.

What does not

  • Crashes at end of installation because a workaround is needed.

It will crash when the installation ends since the installer tries to run the software.

To bypass the crash on startup, create the required missing directory with a command similar to:

mkdir -p $WINEPREFIX/drive_c/users/$USER/AppData/Local/Amazon/Kindle/crashdump
Then Kindle.exe will launch successfully.

Problem after open kindle app. Register window does not load.
by venturacodes on Wednesday March 31st 2021, 10:35
Hi guys,

Recently been working on kindle installation on Manjaro Gnome 64 bits, using Wine 6.4 and WINEPREFIX 32bits, after adding WINEPREFIX variable to export like this:

export WINEPREFIX=~/.wine

Kindle app opened, but register screen keeps loading and never show content. Does this have to do with internet explorer problem, cause I didn't install any browser using wine, don't know if I have to.

Please help. All help appreciated, thanks guys, have a great week!

I had this problem as well. For me, it was that I didn't have the gecko engine installed (and so wine could not render html). I followed the advice in this forum:

...and downloaded the 32bit and 64bit gecko msi files for the version of wine I am running at:
(Make sure that you get the version of gecko that matches your version of wine - on my first attempt, I used the most recent version of gecko and it did not work as I am still on wine-5.0)

Since you are using a wineprefix (like me), make sure to install both the 32bit and 64bit gecko msi files to the wineprefix you are using for the Kindle app:

CD /path/to/where/you/have/placed/wine-gecko-2.47.2-x86.msi
WINEPREFIX="/path/to/your/wineprefix/" wine msiexec /i wine-gecko-2.47.2-x86.msi
WINEPREFIX="/path/to/your/wineprefix/" wine msiexec /i wine-gecko-2.47.1-x86_64.msi

Completing this, I was able to get the Amazon sign in window to render.

HOWEVER...after logging in my Amazon account credentials and submitting, I get another blank white screen in the sign in window and nothing else happens. The Kindle app remains logged out of my account.
That's where I am at now and will report back if I find a fix, but it might be worth seeing if you have better luck.

Got it to work. I upgraded to wine 6.0. : )

Again, I suspect, in your case, the problem involved the gecko driver (needed to render html).
Works fine after creating the directory AppData/Local/Amazon/Kindle/crashdump
