What works

Using the GOG version of Distant Worlds: Universe (setup_distant_worlds_universe_1.9.5.12.exe)

Game runs without any issues.

Sound plays.

Able to create new galaxy, save and restore.

What does not

Distant Worlds Universe is hardcoded to use Internet Explorer & Windows Media Player. By default, these Windows are not included in a fresh Wine install

Workarounds

Game must be run in a WINEARCH=win32 environment, windows components (ie6, wmp9/wmp10) needed for DWU to run will not install in.

Used command-line winetricks to install the following winehq windows components:
vcrun2010
ie6
dotnet35sp1
dotnet40
xna40
gdiplus
wmp9 (broken and does not work under WINEARCH=32bit)
wmp10
d3dx9
d3dx9_43

Also did a manual install of DirectX90c
