Distant Worlds: Universe GOG
Tutorials, starting default game.
What does not
Could not run intro video.
Crashes after some time (out of memory). Seems workaroundable by autosaving at first glance.
winecfg # select Win XP
winetricks winxp vd=1920x1080 grabfullscreen=y
#get a recent version of winetricks to avoid checksum errors in the following, I installed that script just manually in ~/bin under different name
winetricks wmp9 #close MediaPlayer manually
Then: download DirectX 2010 Feb/June and install manually, I found: https://download.microsoft.com...
Install it (the download is just an unpacker, run wine on the extracted DXSETUP.exe )
maybe backup this bottle now
install the game in a _different_, temporay bottle (e.g. in other console export WINEPREFIX=~/.wine-temp); copy it to the target bottle - this prevents the game's installer to overwrite the installation above, then copy/move the game to the target bottle in same C: dir.
Additionall, I had to disable the video in Startup.ini (playmovie 0).
Now, running it (via autorun or exe) should yield the loading screen with "forming nebulae".
remark: this process can probably be uncluttered / streamlined if someone cares enough.
What was not tested
Most of the gameplay, but I do not really expect more considerable problems.
For a game of that time and resource demands, it feels relatively slow (starting up, loading)/sluggish.
