What works

The installer runs successfully, but it prompts the installation of the MS .NET framework 4.8 which you can either accept or decline, the installation will complete fully either way.

Note: I believe using the built-in option to install the framework does not work correctly despite no error messages in the interface, as I've been able to get further by installing it using the usual methods such as winetricks.

What does not

  • With various .NET components installed, the application still crashes after opening the main app from the launcher.

Workarounds

The application not starting can be fixed by replacing mono with .NET framework 4.8 and installing a few additional components.

.NET 4.8 should be possible to install with latest winetricks on a new and clean prefix (before installing Gaea) using "winetricks dotnet48". After just that it still crashes into the built-in crash reporter. According to this forum post it also requires vcrun2019 (with --force because of some current issue), corefonts and d3dcompiler_47, so these should be installed as well after .NET.

This will get the launcher menu to open and work somewhat, it is possible to view the preferences and the about section from there.

However, doing anything that opens the actual application will cause it to freeze and a dialog will appear behind the launcher window
reporting that "Archeon.exe" could not be found and a 2D viewport will be used instead, after agreeing to that the normal UI shows up but cannot be used because a small window with a red X in it indicates that the app has crashed. This window has no buttons and no text and cannot be closed. The only way to quit from here is to kill the process.

What was not tested

The usability of the application itself as I could not get it into a state in which it would work.

Graphics:

  • GPU: Nvidia
  • Driver: proprietary

Additional Comments

Installing the latest version of DXVK into the prefix will not fix the crashing, but it will cause the UI to be no longer static and have a black window with a

glitched loading bar that moves in the window, however this leads to
nothing because the small window still appears. There is also swapchain
spam from DXVK in the console.
