CLIP STUDIO PAINT

What works

• All functions not requiring Clip Studio Assets Login
• Manual Import/Management of Assets/Materials in Clip Studio Paint
  • note this is not the launcher
  • attempting to download assets in Clip Studio Paint will result in opening the main asset page in the launcher
  • it will not enable downloads, account login, nor download the selected assets
• Story/Page/Comic management and import/export
• Animation management, timeline and import/export
• Clip Studio 3D Material Modeler
  • it is a separate program for importing your own 3D models into Clip Studio Paint 
  • the download for Material Modeler can be found further down on the same download page as Clip Studio Paint
  • installation and must be in the same wine prefix as Clip Studio Paint

What does not

• Clip Studio launcher Account Login
  • will return error that email/password are incorrect (despite them being correct)
• Clip Studio launcher Asset Management
  • will return error that paint requires update (despite being latest version)
• Clip Studio launcher Services/Publishing/News
  • will return error that paint requires update (despite being latest version)
• Clip Studio launcher Fanzine/EPUB/Kindle Services
  • will return error that paint requires update (despite being latest version)
  • this does not prevent the creation and export of these products with Clip Studio Paint, only the previews and import/export services associated with them in the launcher
  • the Kindle option requires the additional program of Kindle Previewer to be installed in the same wine prefix

Workarounds

• To fix crashing on startup and black screen
  • wine prefix must be 64bit architecture
  • winecfg version windows must be 7 or 8.1 (winecfg version with windows 10 will crash!)
  • Clip Studio Paint will give you a warning about windows version support when launching but it will still run
  • install corefonts
  • install latest dxvk, d9vk and vcrun2019
• License registration workaround *removed and added to application notes/how-to*
• To fix pen pressure
  • In Clip Studio Paint select: File > Preferences > Tablet Enable "Use mouse mode in setting of tablet driver"

Additional Comments

1. Previously news/updates would connect/populate on the Clip Studio launcher with iframes and wininet (wine ver6.6 and lower) now it crashes Clip Studio paint when launching. If you have them enabled from before updating Wine and suddenly can't use Clip Studio Paint consider removing them from the winecfg.
2. Wine version 6.13 had many issues and I was forced to delete the wine prefix and reinstall Clip Studio after version updating/testing. 
3. Version of Clip Studio Paint prior to 1.11.2 will also sometimes freeze or crash when attempting to use fonts available on the system but not installed to the same wine prefix.
4. The Kindle Preview program is known to have issues in the native Windows environment as well. It has worked in the past and may work again with future updates to Wine or Clip Studio, thus it's mention for installation.
5. Using 3rd party programs such as PlayOnLinux or Lutris has not functioned as well as the default Wine + Winetricks.

This workaround is no longer needed post version 1.11.8 as turning off the internet connection will create a link for offline registration at the bottom of the submission window.

This how-to application installation and license registration workaround assumes the user has already installed wine and winetricks. 

If you are familiar with the command line feel free to disregard mentions of using the GUI.

1. Install version 1.5.4 or 1.9.11 (do not use 1.10.12 as it also requires this step) available on Clip Studios official older version download page.
   • Launch the winetricks GUI to create a new 64bit prefix or ensure you're in the correct 64bit prefix. DO NOT run the installer .exe by double clicking and launching with wine. Doing so will place the program in the default wine prefix. You do not want Clip Studio in the default wine prefix.
   • In the winetricks GUI select 'run uninstaller' to open add/remove programs. Click on the install button and run the installer .exe for 1.5.4 or 1.9.11
   • Close the winetricks GUI and launch Clip Studio 
   • Search for offline/manual registration in the Clip Studio launcher by clicking on the gear icon and locating the license/registration option in the drop down menu.
   • Complete the license registration via the provided web page address link, account log-in and serial number confirmation.
   • Follow any web page links for issues with (device limit amount reached) to deactivate other licenses if needed.
   • Completely close all Clip Studio programs once finished!
2. Install/upgrade to the latest download version of Clip Studio
   • Launch the winetricks GUI again and select the prefix you installed Clip Studio in.
   • In the winetricks GUI select 'run uninstaller' to open add/remove programs. Click on the install button and run the installer .exe for the latest download version.
   • Close the winetricks GUI and launch Clip Studio. Clip Studio will ask for you to wait a moment while it attempts to connect to the internet to check the registration.
   • You will then be prompted with another manual license registration.
   • The prompt only launches if you're upgrading from a previous licensed version. Otherwise Clip Studio will insist you use the account log-in that currently doesn't function and thus prevents license registration. 
   • You are still able to use the Free version and Free Pro/EX trial for 3 months regardless of registration.
   • Complete the license registration via the provided web page address link, account log-in and serial number confirmation.
   • Follow any web page links for issues with (device limit amount reached) to deactivate other licenses if needed.
3. Repeat step 2 for future updates/upgrades

To complete license registration:

1. Disconnect (turn off) Internet.
2. Open CSP select "I already have a License."
3. Look for "Register Offline" link at bottom of window.
4. Reconnect Internet or use different device.
5. Use provided website address in serial number authorization screen to complete registration.

This is not for activation or monthly codes.
