This is an independently developed standalone strategy game, inspired by on Panzer General II and the 5-Star General series originally published by SSI. The rules set is based on those games, but the code is entirely original. There is still some content available based on the original games published by SSI, but most of it is also original and the work of various contributors.
The game engine itself was originally developed as a platform for modders so that anyone can contribute content. As of the date of this submission the game is still under active development, and there is a great deal of custom content available for it, including WWI and WWII campaigns, ancient and fantasy campaigns, and much more.

What works
Everything works. The rendered graphics look a bit small in a 1920x1080 screen.
What does not
It reliably crashes after an hour or so of playing. Smells like a memory leak. It isn't related to functionality, as it is possible to restart the game using the autosave file and continue from the point it crashed.
Workarounds
What was not tested
I did not test creation of new scenarios.

There are two packages that improve the running of just about any application under wine. With Open General they eliminate a specific class of errors related to reserved memory locations. You can install them on Debian using the following command:
sudo apt install wine32-preloader wine64-preloader

I believe that details what I do to get Open General running. I use Lutris as a launcher, but the wine version is the Debian Bullseye system version. I do know I wasn't able to run Open General with any of the patched Lutris versions.
