Tested with Wine v. 7.22

Both Demo and Paid version tested. Demo tested first, then upgraded after tests to paid version.

Thus far, everything functions normally after extensive testing and a few work-arounds.

  • All filtering features work such as hue/saturation/blur
  • All layer functionality works, such as creating/editing new layers, folders, adding layers/folders into existing folders
  • All tools/brushes work, including their presets and configurations, creating/editing tools and tool groups
  • Color swatches/palettes work properly and save
  • Preview pane works properly
  • View/Window options all work properly.
  • All canvas size/rotation/resolution functions work properly.
  • All Selection functions work properly.
  • Pen pressure works properly.

All options function/save properly.

What does not

Pen tablet communication/pressure/calibration issues.

Workarounds

A few necessary work-arounds.

These modifications are necessary for a smooth experience. Tested with Windows 10 32bit as the global configuration for Wine.

If you get a "Discharge at recovery point" warning when first using Sai, ignore this warning.

Open sai2.ini from Sai's directory and make these modifications:

  1. Make sure this setting is set to "yes": AlwaysUseTabletPcApi = yes
  2. Set this to "yes": AvoidWacomBug = yes
  3. Open Sai and go to Other > Options
  4. Go to Pen Tablet (Usually the default option page)
  5. Select "Use Windows API (For Windows Vista or later)"
  6. Restart Sai

You should now have pen pressure on Wacom tablets (Using xsetwacom).

For Huion/Gaomon/other tablets

You'll need to make a few more necessary changes to make alternative tablets interact properly with Sai.

  1. Open Sai and go to Other > Options
  2. Go to Pen Tablet
  3. For Minimum Pressure, set to 1%. Default is 0%.

Updating license to Paid,

Once you've got pen pressure to work and the program is ready to go, you can update your license to a paid license. I chose to do these steps in this order since the program tends to be sensitive to changes.
Once you've added your .slc license file, Sai will open without any license warnings, and the window position will change from its last recent position. If you have multiple monitors, it may appear cut off or a portion of the window missing. On your keyboard press Ctrl + Superkey + Left arrow key until the window is restored and completely visible. Then maximize the window. Now go to File > Exist to close the program. If you close the program by the window buttons, it will not save the window's position. Exiting through the File Menu will. For whatever reason when Sai is first booted up with a new license, the window position is reset, and is reset arbitrarily despite your resolution or monitor settings.

What was not tested

Unless specified, all of the programs functions and features were tested. Testing by an experienced Paint Tool Sai user.

Hardware tested

Graphics:

  • GPU: AMD
  • Driver: open source

Additional Comments

If you open menus or have a menu item selected, it will stay focused and hovered over all other windows, even if you minimize Sai. If you click away from the menus, sometimes they will not disappear. This is an environment bug with Wine and Sai. Simply press the Esc key to exit them. If you exit a menu, but everything is unresponsive, press the Esc key once more to remove the focus away from the selected menu's title or button. Any focusing or window focusing issues are solved by pressing the Esc key or even pressing Ctrl + N to pop up a New Canvas window prompt, and will refocus. A small, but not terribly inconvenient, bug.
