Installation, using wisotool http://code.google.com/p/winezeug/source/browse/trunk/wisotool for the cd version of the game. To do it manually, you need to copy all the cd's to a single folder, and run the setup from there. You'll still need the first cd mounted, however.
What does not
Running the game fails for me, see http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22482. A slight workaround is winetricks ddr=opengl, which lets the game start, but has horrible rendering. See http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22493. Using winetricks ddr=opengl, then enabling 3d acceleration in the game's configuration utility, however, looks perfect.
What was not tested
Playing the game for more than a few minutes.
Nvidia 9800 GTX / 195.36.15 drivers.

Multiplayer can work, but requires some setup first.
The problem is with the current DirectPlay implementation. Read here how to set it up: http://wiki.winehq.org/DirectPlayGames
To get multiplayer working for games that use a DirectPlay version prior to 8, place the following DLLs:
dplayx.dll, dpnet.dll, dpnhpast.dll and dpwsockx.dll in this archive in WINE's windows/system32 directory, then add DLL overrides (native, builtin) with WINECFG.

"ln -s default.tot default.tot"
which creates a cirular symlink from default.tot to default.tot
