What works
The installer starts and proceeds normally through the first CD whether initiated through the WINE uninstall GUI or the Terminal.
What does not
The installation does not finish. When inserting the second CD when it is called for, it either does not recognize the CD, and/or the installer freezes. And I either have to kill the process or end it with System Monitor.
Workarounds
What was not tested
Almost everything except the initial installation.

Additional Comments
I'm question how much the constantly evolving Cinnamon desktop based on Gnome 3 and my AMD HD 5770 using it's proprietary drivers plays into this problem. As I see that this game used to be platinum rated in earlier versions of Wine. Or perhaps this stable version of Wine just has a lot of bugs, as I've had problems with other games not installing or running at all, or as well as ratings from other people.

Multiplayer can work, but requires some setup first.
The problem is with the current DirectPlay implementation. Read here how to set it up: http://wiki.winehq.org/DirectPlayGames
To get multiplayer working for games that use a DirectPlay version prior to 8, place the following DLLs:
dplayx.dll, dpnet.dll, dpnhpast.dll and dpwsockx.dll in this archive in WINE's windows/system32 directory, then add DLL overrides (native, builtin) with WINECFG.
2015-01-31 Admin note: the following was extracted from a user comment made in 2008 and may not be relevant to current Wine.
now
"ln -s default.tot default.tot"
which creates a cirular symlink from default.tot to default.tot
