What works

- Endnote can be installed simply by following the installation prompts, same as in windows 11. Installation is successful.

- Endnote shows up as a Gnome Application

- Reference Database Import from windows works

- PDF preview works

- Outputting formatted references according to style works as expected

- Manually exporting formatted references in a text editor by copying and pasting works as intended

- Creating and managing a new library in the Home folder in Z: or in the fake C: works

- Editing existing references works as in windows

- The window resizes as expected

What does not

- The interface is incomplete: the menus in the left sidebar are blank

- The CWYW integration does not work [main reason for Garbage Rating] - EndNote requires LibreOffice to be 32bit, which is not available as a native RPM or DEB. It can be installed as a 32bit windows program in Wine, but then the two programs will not communicate.

- If any other wine backed software is opened while endnote is open, it will hang and eventually crash.

- Updating Endnote does not work

- Scaling in Wayland is probably not working as intended: the menus and graphics are jagged and pixellated.

- All endnote features inside a word processing software.

Workarounds

What was not tested

- Importing from other referencing software

- PDF online indexing

- Importing reference files from libraries citations files

- It was not possible to test life reference reformatting in a text editor

- I have not tested LibText and similar suites, as they are not part of my workflow on windows or linux

Additional Comments

Admin note: rating changed to conform to the rating definitions.

Giving this software a "garbage" rating feels excessively harsh, but as it is EndNote offers barely half of its intended functionalities.

The issues with the GUI are most likely due to my running it in a VM (with 3d acceleration enables and 128mg of video memory), but the lack of CWYW with LibreOffice it's all on Clarivate. If they moved their integration plugin to 64-bit, thus working with libreoffice rpm (or deb), I feel it would make the jankiness of EndNote less of a show stopper, since I suppose it would work with the LibreOffice version we get on Fedora. It has to be said that EndNote integration with LibreOffice is still suboptimal and poorer in features even on Windows, as MS Word is the favoured word processor.

As it stands, the features inside EndNote itself are functional and maybe someone who needs to just manage a library or is ok with copy/pasting references to a paper would be able to limp along. I although feel this scenario would defeat the purpose of the software: giving up the integration with text editors and the linked automatisms.
