HowTo / Notes

HOWTO
Use Wine version 0.9.36 or newer (version 0.9.31 or earlier also work)

To prevent installer windows from being hidden, change Wine's settings so that the window manager is not allowed to control Wine applications (can be done with winecfg).

In Wine versions prior to 0.9.17, elements such as taskbars designed to cover other applications are not hidden when Age of Empires II is run in full-screen. This can be fixed by not allowing the window manager to control Wine applications (can be changed in winecfg), or by changing the taskbar's options so that windows are allowed to cover it.

Multiplayer
To get multiplayer working, place the following DLLs in Wine's windows/system32 directory,  then start winecfg and add dll overrides (native, builtin) for them: dplayx, dpnet, dpnhpast and dpwsockx.
NOTE: the game freezes when exiting a multiplayer game.

Wine 1.3.24 fc15 x86_64 Install Problem
by James Donley on Tuesday December 13th 2011, 9:15
The AoE trial installer is asking for administrative privileges after the EULA prompt is accepted in Wine 1.3.24 (the version in the repositories) on Fedora 15 64-bit. I tried running the installer in Windows 2000 and Windows 98 compatibility mode in winecfg, same results. I'm not able to test this on other versions because I'm restricted to using software from the repositories because of our security policy.

Is anyone able to reproduce this? If so, is it only a problem with 1.3.24? Screenshot here: i.imgur.com/ED35W.png

look at the two errors, this is causing it.

Are they? I get those errors running any applications on Wine with this install. I believe I looked them up a few months ago and they were just problems with the 64-bit version of wine, though I can't remember for certain. They also don't seem to affect any other application.

Regardless, I'll look into it a bit more.

looks like a broken wineprefix, can you try installing it in a fresh one? you can use a different wineprefix with setting the env WINEPREFIX (like WINEPREFIX=/home/USER/.wineaoetrial)

#/bin/bash
export WINEARCH=win32
export WINEPREFIX=$HOME/.wine/
wine $HOME/.wine/drive_c/MSAoE.exe
$ ./aoe_run
err:process:create_process starting 64-bit process L"C:\\windows\\system32\\wine
boot.exe" not supported in 32-bit wineprefix
err:process:start_wineboot failed to start wineboot, err 193

Hasn't changed anything. I tried with and without the WINEARCH line.

Sorry, I misunderstood before.

You're absolutely right, it seems they were related. I created a new Wine prefix by just moving my old one to a new directory and starting over; the errors I listed before disappeared completely and it no longer has problems installing.

We updated our systems over the summer to Fedora 15 and updated Wine at some point, so I'm sure that had something to do with it. Appreciate the help.

you dont have to move your old .wine prefix, you can just set the env WINEPREFIX to a unexisting folder and there wine will create a new wineprefix :)
if you like aoe, try aoe2tc (age of empires 2 the conquerors).

by James Donley on Tuesday December 13th 2011, 13:01
Nah, I'd rather move the old wine directory if it's broken and just start from scratch; I didn't have that many things installed to begin with so it's not a big loss.

I actually own AoE1 and 2, I just don't have the discs and needed to make sure they'd actually install on our systems before I went looking for them.

i could give you a aoe2tc portable version with widescreen/custom resolution patches, i dont know if this is legally in your country, in mine it is :) if your interested, send me a message because i disilike to post this officially, i would enjoy a test restult too.

Unfortunately, that wouldn't be legal where I'm at, especially since this is a university network and they tend to be very picky about legitimate licensing (I'm working with the sysadmin on putting some of this stuff together but he can't circumvent policy or he'll put his job at risk). However, I could possibly try those patches out; widescreen and resolution patches certainly wouldn't be a problem.

do you own age of empires 2 the conquerors? if so, then it shouldnt be illegaly. i have to check if the patcher works with the aoe2.

I do, but the department here is very strict about those things, I'd rather be safe than sorry and the sysadmin pretty much said the same. It's not a big deal bringing my discs in, they're just buried in some boxes in my basement is all.
