FreeCommander needs a wine prefix with the Windows version set to "WindowsXP".

To run FreeCommander in a proper way please set Wine's version to WindowsXP. To do this use the Wine configuration tool winecfg:
sherlock@holmes:~$ wine winecfg
You can change this setting also directly via the command line:
in a 32bit prefix:
sherlock@holmes:~$ wine winecfg -v winxp
in a 64bit prefix:
sherlock@holmes:~$ wine winecfg -v winxp64
