My previous tests used fglrx driver which may have skewed the data. I'm using nvidia driver now and no problem.

Disable window manager controlling in winecfg
Please disable (untick) the "Allow the window manager to control the windows" option in winecfg. It can be found under the "Graphics" settings. If you don't disable it, the game might not go to the fullscreen mode.
