Selected Test Results

What works

  • Canvas can be painted on like normal with the few brushes I tested, but felt somewhat sluggish since the CPU does both rendering and brush calculation
  • The floating windows also seem work great and even snap correctly with multiple monitors
  • Painter seems to generally be stable

What does not

  • Pressure sensitivity on a Wacom tablet
    • Changing from wintab to RTS in the settings does not work
  • Generally the pen has the tendency 90 % of the time to not be registered on the canvas
    • The brush tracking window registers it however perfectly
  • The welcome screen just seems to be grey and all of the buttons, that would normally be there, don't seem to do anything if they are even loaded
    • See workarounds
  • Dynamic cursor shows as a black box
    • Can be changed to a static one in the settings
  • GPU seems to not be recognised for brush acceleration
  • Some dialog windows appear blank until covered by something else (this may just be my nvidia drivers)

Workarounds

Setup with a new Windows install:

  1. Once Windows is setup install the .NET Framework 4.8 & the latest C++ Redistributable
  2. Open regedit and make an export of the entire registry
  3. Install Painter like normal
  4. Launch Painter to make sure it makes a config and then close it
  5. Repeat step 2
  6. Use RegDiff (http://p-nand-q.com/download/r...) with /diff to make a difference file between the 2 exported .reg files
  7. Create a new x64 wine prefix with the winetricks & winecfg entries found further down
  8. Copy the following folders from the Windows install to the equivalent wine prefix subfolders
    1. C:\Program Files\Corel
    2. C:\Program Files (x86)\Corel
    3. C:\ProgramData\Corel
    4. C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Corel
  9. Copy the following files (this may just be a problem with the current winetricks install of msxml3)
    1. C:\Windows\System32\msxml3.dll
    2. C:\Windows\System32\msxml3r.dll
  10. Launch regedit and import the difference file we created in step 6
  11. Launch Painter

Winetricks installed:

  • vcrun2013
  • vcrun2015
  • dotnet40
  • dotnet48
  • msxml3
  • corefonts
  • iertutil
  • wininet
  • ie8
  • d3dcompiler_47
  • d3dx9_43
  • d3dx10_43
  • msxml3
  • win10

DLLs configured in winecfg:

  • d3d10 (Native, Builtin)
  • d3d9 (Native, Builtin)

Since every option is greyed out until the welcome screen is closed one has to manually close this specific window. (It is the only one that has the wine icon instead of the Painter icon as it's preview icon in KDE's Alt+Tab)

What was not tested

Any other features.

Graphics:

  • GPU: Nvidia
  • Driver: proprietary

The installer seems be completely unusable at this point even with "/qn" (quiet operation) as a parameter. ( use "/?" for more parameters for the installer )
The problem seems to be related to the fact that the installer uses some of the function of Internet Explorer that just don't quiet work with wine's Gecko and even with ie8 installed with winetricks it seems to break.
As such I tried to extract Painter from a new Windows install.

Exporting the entire registry is probably excessive, but I also tried exporting & importing indivdual Keys and it just lead to a lot of frustration.

Using dxvk: Installing dxvk with winetricks leads to better brush performance as the CPU now only has to do the brush calculation, however it also breaks the floating windows and other dialogs and just shows them as black, until another window moving uncovers them, but the next frame they just become black again. This could again just be a problem with my Nvidia drivers. (Driver version 515.86.01)
