What works

Aside from requiring that all language packs be selected during installation, everything works surprisingly well.

-Ruby works OOB for me (others mentioned they needed to disable it) as such all extensions I've tested work (as does the console)

-Experience is identical to Windows except for 1 bug listed below (in my judgement it is even faster than native windows)

What does not

- ORBIT & PAN (kind of a big deal): This is not an issue in general navigation or rendering, (Walk, Camera Placement, and Ruby navigation all work). I haven't dived into this much yet but I will submit a bug report and update this if I find a valid workaround.

Workarounds

What was not tested

Everything was tested with the exception of checking every extension (all extensions I did test work, but not all extensions have been tested).

Hardware tested

Graphics:

  • GPU: Intel
  • Driver: open source

Additional Comments

If Orbit and Pan worked OOB or with workarounds I would give this a triple-platinum rating (if it were possible)

Orbit and Pan Update
by Mark Packett on Saturday March 30th 2024, 16:55
Orbit and Pan works while using (holding down) the middle mouse button. When using the O shortcut to orbit and pan, however, it fails. This is obviously more problematic on a touchpad than with a mouse. The error 'seems' to be related to win:GetPointerDevices. Workaround for now is simply using a real or virtual middle mouse button.

Works but not with plugins
by August Rydberg on Saturday October 14th 2023, 4:30
I'm happy to see Sketchup 2023 working after being stuck on 2018 for a long time. And installation was much easier.

However, /DisableRubyAPI is needed to make it not crash and unfortunately this makes it impossible to use plugins such as Twilight render. So I'll need to go back to 2018 again. If plugin support could be made working that would be awesome.
wineprefix

Thank you!

It is setup a directory, where drive C is created with all libraries and settings.

With such solution you could setup different Windows versions, and it allow to have multiple environment (for application needs).

it works
by szilveszter on Saturday August 12th 2023, 11:26
Thanks for the comments and help. The program can be installed and used as follows:

(1) Installation

All selectable languages must be enabled. Even so, an 'invalid handle' message is generated, but the installation is completed.

(2) Starting the program with NVIDIA graphics processor:

__NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia WINEPREFIX="/DATA/prg/sketchup_2023" WINEESYNC=1 WINEARCH="win64" /opt/wine-staging/bin/wine64 "/DATA/prg/sketchup_2023/drive_c/Program Files/SketchUp/SketchUp 2023/SketchUp.exe" /DisableRubyAPI

do you also (as myself) have the issue where the selection box is not visible (not possible select multiple elements with bounding box)? I'd say it's quite necessary feature, so I wouldn't actually give "gold" badge in this case, unless... you know a workaround?

and by the way - 3d warehouse works, it even inserts the component into your model automatically - I've tested it, so you can indicate that in the report.
Workaround
by montini on Saturday August 12th 2023, 9:19
Installation might be completed if workaround of version 2022 is applied - you must select all language packs to complete setup. Installed application runs, but ends up in black window after login etc.

Follow-up:

it's also possible to fix the black window issue by starting Sketchup with "wine SketchUp.exe /DisableRubyAPI". In this case you end up in operational enviroment, mouse works, icons are clickable, but impossible to access application menu.

it is possible also to gain back the menus by switching sessions from wayland to X11 (logout of ubuntu and choose X11 while logging in).
