What works
Everything - but there was some trouble with the original installer, and the game required a change in its configuration file to point to a correct location of the cd.
Fortunately there's a modified installer for XP and Vista that takes care of some of the bugs in the game (it installs the game along with the official patch) eliminates the weird colors when the time of the day changes and scales the game to fullscreen. It's available here - with it, the game installs and runs flawlessly
