The test results you have selected are very old and may not represent the current state of Wine.
Selected Test Results (selected in 'Test Results' table below)
Setup, game itself
What does not
No sound whatsoever. Sound works only on first screen menus.
What was not tested
This game could perform much better if sound would be working. There is also a problem with dualhead configuration. I have second desktop above the primary and when I move mouse to upper edge, it leaves the game switching it to black.
To prevent installer windows from being hidden, change Wine's
settings so that the window manager is not allowed to control Wine
applications (can be done with winecfg).
Elements such as taskbars designed to cover other applications are not
hidden when Age of Empires II is run in full-screen. This can be fixed
by not allowing the window manager to control Wine applications (can be
changed in winecfg), or by changing the taskbar's options so that
windows are allowed to cover it.
Crack If the game does not recognice your CD, you may need to use a crack. This may or may not be legal, depending on where you live.
Multiplayer To get multiplayer working, place the following DLLs in Wine's windows/system32 directory, then start winecfg and add dll
overrides (native, builtin) for them: dplayx, dpnet,
dpnhpast and dpwsockx.
NOTE: the game freezes when exiting a multiplayer game.

Game not launching

I install the game and it doesn't give any error, but when i try to launch the game, the pc loggs off and it leads me to the login screen.
The game runs very slowly, constantly outputs debug messages in the terminal
by Alexander on Sunday September 12th 2010, 16:56
The game runs with little pauses about every 150-250ms. Terminal starts to output from the early start of the game constantly:
"err:d3d_surface:d3dfmt_p8_init_palette This code should never get entered for DirectDraw!, expect problems
fixme:d3d_surface:IWineD3DSurfaceImpl_BltOverride Unsupported blit operation falling back to software"
Changing DirectDrawRenderer from opengl to gdi takes these messages away, but the game performance keeps the same.
Age of Empires Gold Edition
by Steven Willis on Sunday July 1st 2007, 19:35
I have Ubuntu Feisty (7.04) which came with wine 0.9.33. The installation of AoE worked just fine, but as soon as I tried to play it would give an error about how Direct3D or DirectDraw or something couldn't be initialized. I added the wine .deb repository as detailed here: www.winehq.org/site/download-deb and installed the latest version (0.9.40) and the game works as described above... basically:
- some text that should be white show up as black, this is sometimes a problem when on a black background, but not often.
- the game runs slowly, there seem to be slight pauses every second or so.
- I haven't tested network play or anything.
