XCOM 2

The official Windows XCOM 2 binary distributed by 2K Games through marketplaces such as Epic and Steam.

There have been a handful of patches published since the official game release, but none since March 2022 at the time of writing, so all versions of the game are more or less identical.

What works

The launch sequence, UI interaction, and initial cutscenes all work perfectly. Backgrounds render without issues, and the world and soldiers themselves when in the tutorial mission likewise.

What does not

The blue limits of the movable area do not show up, and it is impossible to move your soldiers, making the game unplayable.

Workarounds

What was not tested

Anything following the beginning of the tutorial mission, because one is unable to progress beyond it. This includes combat, enemies, base management, research, and the ability to beat the game.

HowTo / Notes

XCOM 2 on Wine

The game can be purchased through the Epic Games Store and launched via the Heroic Games Launcher or Lutris, through Steam, or through another vendor such as GOG.

Out of the box, the game will not work as expected. A game breaking bug prevents players from progressing beyond the tutorial mission, because they will not be able to move or interact with operatives.

To fix this issue, launch winetricks on the prefix where XCOM 2 is installed, and install the vcrun2013 component (Microsoft Visual C++ 2013). Once this is done, the game should run as though on Windows.

You may observe better game performance using Wine-GE, or Proton if you are using Steam, instead of vanilla Wine, as they come with more gaming-oriented optimizations and libraries.
