Basically, everything. Gameplay, installation, etc. The install tried to fail, but worked the second time.
Map Editor seemed fine.
Using an "Age of Empires, Collector's edition", it all worked out of the box - Wine set to Windows XP (probably should have used an older version), virtual desktop, No-CD crack was not required, cinimatics worked well (under Compiz Fusion, no less).
What does not
High (~100%) CPU usage, which manifested in very minor performance loss in game. Not serious enough to disturb casual gaming. This may become less of an issue on newer hardware.
Menu fonts (for main menu only) were black - very hard to read. Not serios enough to be an issue, and in-game menus are fine.
Giving tribute to allies was painfully slow, and non-functional, as far as I'm concerned, in the event of a proper networked game. However I didn't test networked play.
What was not tested
Network play. Scenario Maker was not examined in-depth.
Gold seems a bit of a stretch, the CPU is just too high, and performance is slightly too low. Silver seemed appropriate, given the menu-redraw issue.

With recent wine version(atleast with 1.1.20) you can play backround music with no problem too. While using the nocd crack, just keep your cd on cd drive and the game is able to play the music. Am I right that AoEII doesnâ€™t have an option to install _backround music_ tracks to harddisk?
One should be able to rip the audiocd track from the cd and set it as a cd drive, so that AoEII would be able to play the music from that. It might need empty first track, though. Hacking AoEII executable to change the playing format from audiocd to raw cda tracks from game dir should be possible, though cumbersome, task...
One word of warning, though: Keeping cd on cd drive slows the game even more...
Â¹ I havenâ€™t been able to confirm that this annoyance exists.
To get multiplayer working you have to use by now the directplay libraries from microsoft, still (since 2006) no open source libraries for direct play that include libraries to open sockets and close to play games, so install winetricks:
(in ubuntu/debian) sudo apt-get install winetricks
and then exec:
It will download the directplay libraries from microsoft and install them, that's all, tcp/ip will work with direct connect.
