What works

Web page rendering. Downloadable Adobe Flash installer works. CSS menu over Flash. Youtube, choppy playback. Hulu videos streams, but the flash on their home page appears to be stuck loading. Adding, import/export, and organize bookmarks from the star-plus icon. Most of the drop downs under the search box works or can be accessed. Tabbed browsing.

What does not

Browsing with multiple tabs, sometimes a tab get stuck/freeze loading a page. Flash flickers when mouse is over the area. Choppy Youtube playback, IE appears frozen when buffering/downloading video. Vimeo is unusable, possibly ActiveX related. Imported html bookmarks from Opera 9.6, now Favorites/bookmarks will freeze IE when star icon is clicked. The Help drop down menu freezes IE when selected. Pop-up blocker doesn't show any blocked messages.

Workarounds

What was not tested

Phishing filter. Quality of Hulu playback.

Additional Comments

Used winetricks and files from my XP partition. Most tabs in Internet Options can be viewed and changed, but IE will freeze on Privacy tab. Make changes to one tab at a time and click OK, IE will freeze but changes are saved. Temporary Internet Files only accept 8 for disk space/size. IE became more stable after i made the cache folder a symbolic link to a folder in /dev/shm.

  winetricks ie7
The install seems flaky, so if it hangs or crashes, try it again.

WARNING

This note was originally added to IE Version 5, but may be relevant to all versions.

Don't run IE on an RW mounted DOS partition !
Pretty problematic directory renaming/corruption can happen.
This seems to happen if Wine doesn't have access to certain Windows registry keys.
Renames e.g. "Program Files" to "$!$!$!$!.pfr" and does other horrible things.
BTW, it does not only happen with IE, as it seems to be a generic Windows Setup process of Explorer which is doing this, which can be launched under multiple circumstances.
To be safe, use a backup copy only, i.e. copy all relevant windows files over e.g. to an ext2 partition.
