What works

With TFix, everything: audio, cutscenes, graphics, widescreen, controls, load/save.

DromEd seems to be working.

Original CD install works flawlessly.

What does not

GOG setup crashes upon registration at the end: confirming will revert the installation. Killing the GOG setup when the error arises will preserve the installed data and the game will run just fine.

What was not tested

Extended features in DromEd.

Additional Comments

TFix was required for me to run the game.

It is not required to install the Intel video codecs, neither the ones on disc nor the ones provided by winetricks.

The original installer will prompt a DirectX limitation error when Wine is not running in Win95 or Win98 mode.
Running the setup with `-lgntforce` will bypass the error message.
Still with the original installer, I copied the THIEF/MOVIES folder to the game installation directory to play the videos without CD.

With GOG version TFix will prompt a warning about language options: I ignored it.

HowTo / Notes

Hardware compatibility

Thief is an old game that will have problems on modern hardware, Windows or Wine. Therefore you must install TFix to run the game.

TFix might prompt a warning on language settings for the GOG version: you can safely ignore it.

Installation

Original setup

  • Launch it with `wine setup.exe -lgntforce` to bypass the DirectX limitation warning.
  • The Intel video codecs proposed at the end of the installation ("iv5codecs.exe") are no longer necessary with recent versions of Wine.
  • Copy the THIEF/MOVIES folder from the disc to the game installation folder in order to play the game cutscene without disc.

GOG setup

It may prompt an error message at the end of the process. Do not confirm or it will revert the install. Kill wine instead.
