What works
Singleplayer (Got up to "The Sword" mission)
GOG installer
Sound
What does not
EAX doesn't work perfectly out of the box.
Workarounds
I tried three ways to enable EAX the first was using the DSOAL wrapper, this worked perfectly but the game would crash after about a minute of gameplay.
The second attempt was to override the dsound.dll library in winecfg. This allowed EAX to work when the sound mode was set to OpenAL. The effect was an improvement but not quite as accurate as creative alchemy under windows. It also created a sound crackle effect whenever switching menus.
As a long shot I tried installing creative alchemy in wine with a derestrictor, this did not make any difference.

Additional Comments
On the whole the game works out of the box, you only have to do extra configurations if you want to use EAX.

Thief is an old game that will have problems on modern hardware, Windows or Wine. Therefore you must install TFix to run the game.
TFix might prompt a warning on language settings for the GOG version: you can safely ignore it.
It may prompt an error message at the end of the process. Do not confirm or it will revert the install. Kill wine instead.
