Additional Comments

* The setup application from GOG doesn't finish the installation process, possibly due to some issue registrating the Indeo video codecs this game uses. The problem is that the GOG installer erases ALL the installed data on the very moment it crashes. I tried to force-quit the GOG installer in order to prevent that, as suggested here by other users, but to no avail: the game data was always erased even before force-quitting. Therefore, I installed the game using its original CDs. * The installer from the original CDs refuses to run on Windows XP or newer, invoking some sort of incompatibility. Therefore, I had to tell Wine to emulate Windows 98 in order to install the game. After that, I switched Wine back to Windows XP and the game worked flawlessly. * I had no problems changing the discs on request of the original setup program. * Knowing that the game requires the Indeo video codecs (which are mandatory if you want to watch the game's cutscenes), I installed them previously via Winetricks. For some reason, the cutscenes didn't work that way on my system. So, I installed them again via the game's original setup application. Everything went perfect. * I downloaded and installed TFix 1.12.

HowTo / Notes

Hardware compatibility

Thief is an old game that will have problems on modern hardware, Windows or Wine. Therefore you must install TFix to run the game.

TFix might prompt a warning on language settings for the GOG version: you can safely ignore it.

Installation

Original setup

  • Launch it with `wine setup.exe -lgntforce` to bypass the DirectX limitation warning.
  • The Intel video codecs proposed at the end of the installation ("iv5codecs.exe") are no longer necessary with recent versions of Wine.
  • Copy the THIEF/MOVIES folder from the disc to the game installation folder in order to play the game cutscene without disc.

GOG setup

It may prompt an error message at the end of the process. Do not confirm or it will revert the install. Kill wine instead.
