What works
The game installs ok.
What does not
When I try to run it with "wine THIEFII.EXE" I get a popup saying "Direct X version 7 or higher is not installed".
Workarounds
What was not tested
Didn't know how to go at it but I did NOT try to install DirectX since I thought this was the wrong way to approach the problem. Did not try other versions of wine.

you MUST install "iv5play.exe" from the game disc
if you want to view the cinematics then you will also need a native quartz.dll

First question: how do you start the game in window mode?
Secondly here is the result if I don't try to start in window mode:
fixme:win:EnumDisplayDevicesW ((null),0,0x33f6a8,0x00000000), stub!
err:x11settings:X11DRV_ChangeDisplaySettingsEx No matching mode found 1680x1050x16 @0! (XRandR)
err:x11settings:X11DRV_ChangeDisplaySettingsEx No matching mode found 1680x1050x16 @0! (XRandR)
At which point I get a blank error box.

schedtool -a 0x2 -e wine thief2.exe
(This was adapted from similar advice by David Hall in the "Command and Conquer Gold" AppDB comments)

taskset -c 1 wine thief2.exe
by Paul Bredbury on Saturday January 1st 2011, 4:14
taskset -c 0 /usr/bin/wine thief2.exe
or
schedtool -a 0x1 -e /usr/bin/wine thief2.exe
Also, I get a black screen and crash after loading a game, but this fixes it:
echo -e "[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Wine\\Direct3D]\n\"DirectDrawRenderer\"=\"opengl\"" | wine regedit -
