HOWTO prevent crashes due to attacks from cultists

The "Cultist Bug" that affects the Windows version of this game affects the game when run under Wine.  The bug occurs whenever an enemy cultist attacks, causing the game to crash.  The source of the bug seems to be a poorly configured animation or sound file that worked properly under pre-NT windows systems.

There are a number of workarounds for this bug:

  1. Don't let cultists attack.  Cultists are the weakest enemy in the game and can typically be eliminated before they get an action, prevent them from attacking and causing the crash.
  2. Edit the WeapDef.Dat in the game's Data directory and adjust the "AP To Use" of the "Laspistol" (the cultist's weapon) from 15 to 50 or higher.  This will prevent the cultists from attacking due to a lack of AP.  The file WeapDef.Dat is installed as read-only and you will have to enable write access via Properties > Permissions > Access.
  3. Edit the maps to remove or replace the cultists.  The map editor WH40K_TD.exe functions under Wine and you can edit any map that has cultists present to either remove them entirely or to replace them with other enemy units.
