I got this game to work in a virtual machine (vmware) with network support. It works just as fast as on a real pc with slight delay for user input, but plays smooth anyway. Network play works stable. Steps involved: -Create a virtual machine with bridged networking (i used vmware). -Install debian 6 (i used netinstall - desktop environment). -Install the virtual machine additions. -Install RA2/YR on a windows pc (preferably winXP), updated and with no-cd crack (dont forget to copy the .MIX files off the YR cd to the game install root directory). -Copy the wsock32.dll (patch to make the game use UDP instead of IPX/SPX protocol) file to the game install root directory. At this point, test if the game starts, if not, do not proceed. -Now, in your virtual machine install wine 1.3.17 -Copy the entire westwood directory on the C drive installed in windows to ~/.wine/drive_c -Open up winecfg, check to make sure default settings on the Applications tab is set to Windows XP. -Still in winecfg, add an override rule for wsock32. -Last setting in winecfg, enable Driver Emulation on the Sound tab so you have sound in-game. -Change/add in xorg.conf under the "Screen" section: DefaultDepth 16 (this is needed so the game doesn't lag, thanks to Keith!) -Edit RA2MD.INI in the westwood directory. Under [Video], change ScreenWidth and ScreenHeight to the resolution of your choice. This is used so you have full-screen gameplay. Note this does not affect the game's menu resolution. ** Registry speed fix is NOT needed. In my setup it makes the game lag like hell. If you want to use it regardless, make sure to make modifications in [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\AppDefaults\gamemd.exe\Direct3D] (notice using gameMD.exe instead of game.exe for YR).
