Additional Comments

For Game Installation, set setup.exe to Windows 95 mode and run it in a 640x480 virtual desktop. You will need to do the standard 2mb install. The mouse will not function correctly, instead use the TAB key to tab over to the Next button to install the game. After the game is installed, you will need to set falloutw.exe to run in Windows 98 mode without a virtual desktop. In the event you install the Official 1.1 patch, be sure to rename all of the included files to a lowercase format. The patch hosted on Atomic Gamers/No Mutants Allowed will work correctly, but you need to rename the files/folders from an uppercase format to a lowercase format. Finally, if you do install the Official 1.1 patch, ensure that you delete fallout.cfg before attempting to relaunch the game.

Installation Instructions

Set up or run everything below with a 32 bit prefix, set to Windows 98

1. Insert your fallout CD-ROM
2. Run setup.exe, _setup.exe or autorun.exe (in the autorun folder) and select Install
3. While Fallout fails to detect your full disk size, you should still select HUMONGOUS installation. This will install all the game files to your hard drive, so you don't need the game disc inserted at all times. if you can't, see Troubleshooting.
   • After the installation, it'll play a preview for another Interplay game. At this point, you are safe to close the application (there is no key to skip the preview; alt + f4 and similar commands are your only option.)
4. Go to the install location (PATH_TO_WINE_PREFIX/drive_c/Program Files/Interplay/Fallout/ by default) and open fallout.cfg. Delete the line containing "art_cache_size="
5. You can now run the game, in falloutw.exe
   • If you have the 1.0 version, and want to patch it, you can install the official 1.1 patcher here.
     There's a zip file inside the zip file. Extract this nested zip's contents into the fallout folder in your wine prefix, replacing and merging all files, then run the new executable when you want to play.

Troubleshooting

Fallout thinks my disk is too small for the humongous installation

Do the small installation, and go to the game's folder in your prefix's C drive (./drive_c/Program Files/Interplay/Fallout). Copy in the following files and folders from the disc to your installation, replacing any duplicates as you go: master.dat, critter.dat, the entire data folder, and the entire ereg folder.

Checking Version

You may need to check your game's version at some point, if you get into the modding scene or want to use the 1.1 patcher. The easiest way to check is to start the game, and look at the lower right corner of the main menu. In faded white text, the version number will be there. Linked is an image of what it will look like.
