Fallout

What works

Everything I tested. CD version 1.2 . Just installed by double clicking the "Fallout" file on CD. Didn't have to change to Windows98. No performance issues.

Opening cutscene and cutscene about the water pump work fine. Character select, character stats select works fine. Combat, lighting effects, inventory select all have no problems.

What does not

Nothing. Everything I tested works.

Only tested the first level with the cave and rats. I did not play more than that.

Installation Instructions

Set up or run everything below with a 32 bit prefix, set to Windows 98

1. Insert your fallout CD-ROM
2. Run setup.exe OR run autorun.exe (in the autorun folder) and select Install
3. While Fallout fails to detect your full disk size, you should still select HUMONGOUS installation. This will install all the game files to your hard drive, so you don't need the game disc inserted at all times. if you can't, see Troubleshooting.
4. Go to the install location and open fallout.cfg. Delete the line which starts art_cache_size=
5. You can now run falloutw.exe, which is the game.
   • If you have the 1.0 version, and want to patch it, you can install the 1.1 patcher here.
     There's a zip file inside the zip file. Extract this nested zip's contents into the fallout folder in your wine prefix, replacing and merging all files, then run the new executable when you want to play.

Troubleshooting

Fallout thinks my disk is too small for the humongous installation

The solution here is a bit of a pain; do the small installation, and go to the game's folder in your prefix's C drive (./drive_c/Program Files/Interplay/Fallout) Copy in the following files and folders from the disc to your installation, replacing any duplicates as you go: master.dat, critter.dat, the entire data folder, and the entire ereg folder.

Checking Version

You may need to check your game's version at some point, if you get into the modding scene or want to use the 1.1 patcher. The easiest way to check is to start the game, and look at the lower right corner of the main menu. In faded white text, the version number will be there. Linked is an image of what it will look like.
