Map
by Harry Bullen on Friday July 3rd 2009, 4:58
Using wine 1.1.24 on gentoo amd64 I cannot view the map. Though the rest of the game is very playable this is a bit annoying. I have tried a lot of different setting in wine but have seen no difference. Dose anyone know how to fix this?
FSAA should be disabled on nVidia
by Javier Kohen on Saturday January 31st 2009, 19:12
In short: disable FSAA and all performance and transparency problems with nVidia will be gone.

I've been having transparency and performance issues with this game for a long time. Today I got to the underwater section and it was very hard to play with these problems, so I decided to disable some graphics options to get some performance boost. Well, I found out that just disabling FSAA would not only give me a huge performance increase, but also all transparency problems would be gone; now transparencies work (no more black rectangles), which makes the underwater section fully playable and the game much more enjoyable. Also performance is very smooth now.

nVidia 9800 GTX+ with drivers 180.22.

I don't care much about FSAA in general, but it would be nice to see it work.
Game crashes X
by Michael Behr on Sunday August 17th 2008, 15:53
Not only will this game not run for me, but when I try to run it, it crashes X, after changing the screen resolution and then, strangely, waiting for a keypress. If it can't find the CD, it will immediately crash with a GLXBadDrawable error - unless another Wine program is running, in which case it will do the same thing as when it can find the CD.

I forgot to mention: I'm running Wine 1.0 on Ubuntu 8.04.1
OK I strraightened that out, now I'm getting the load error
by JOhn on Saturday July 12th 2008, 2:07
I have made the registry changes exactly as suggested, but the game still crashes upon loading a game.

I just upgraded to Wine v 1.1.1 and it seems to work OK
Having a problem with getting Psychonauts to run
by JOhn on Wednesday July 9th 2008, 22:21
When I launch it using the terminal, I get this output:

pastebin.ca/1067517

by yoshi on Saturday June 28th 2008, 6:56
i didnt copy and paste they key only that subfolders name. it was fairly long and i wanted to make sure i got it right. the fbo key entry i added myself. and it didnt work so i must be missing something. though it doesnt look like it to me

Well, your mileage may vary. Check video drivers, reinstall Wine or game itself, check GLSL in registry, try another NOCD. This game does work under Wine and in good quality.
RE:

whats glsl?
RE:
by Novoselcev on Sunday June 29th 2008, 1:12
See "UseGLSL" key description in FAQ.

by Novoselcev on Thursday June 26th 2008, 11:51
You may edit any *.reg file directly, but using "wine regedit" in console is preferable way. See wiki.winehq.org/UsefulRegistryKeys for more details; look for Direct3D section specifically.

Most of modern games need registry tweaking anyway, so better get used to it.
problems with water
by yoshi on Monday June 23rd 2008, 18:08
i am told wine 1.0 uses fbo by default and i am using wine 1.0 on ubuntu 8.04 64bit with a gts8800 graphics card and the bug with the water just makes this game unplayable at times. i could barely navigate around the lake enough to get to the girl who teaches you levitation and going up against the giant lung fish? forget about it i cant see clearly enough to avoid being thrown into the water
RE: problems with water
by Novoselcev on Thursday June 26th 2008, 10:26
That's my config exactly (8800 gts 512). No problems with water or fires. Here is part of my user.reg:

[Software\\Wine\\Direct3D] 1212182237
"DirectDrawRenderer"="opengl"
"OffscreenRenderingMode"="fbo"
"PixelShaderMode"="enabled"
"UseGLSL"="enabled"
"VertexShaderMode"="hardware"
"VideoMemorySize"="512"

Hope it helps.

that page doesnt really tell me how to add the registry entries. i have already been directed to it and read it. for instance my direct3d folder in regedit has no subfolders in it. when i tried adding the subfolder (name copy and pasted right from the site) and put the fbo entry in it nothing happened
RE: problems with water
by Novoselcev on Saturday June 28th 2008, 6:53
Just write it by hand then, don't copy-paste. Run regedit, navigate to the key of "Direct3D", use right mouse button on it to bring up context menu and select "Create" -> "String value" (i use Russian version of Wine, so your menu items may differ). Then just modify newly created key by clicking on it; you can edit key's name and key's value separately.
Error while loading
by Fabrizio on Thursday June 12th 2008, 9:01
Psychonaut freeze when load scenario. There is the same problem with cedega but there you can disable NV_VAR option and the game go happy.How to do same in wine?
This bug it's for NVIDIA card owner.I'm using 169.x driver(stable)

Use "OffscreenRenderingMode"="fbo"
RE: Error while loading
by Fabrizio on Thursday June 12th 2008, 18:21
Thank you,I setted option to fbo and it runs perfectly but the gme is slower...there's another solution?Why cedega hasn't this issue?
RE: Error while loading
by vitamin on Thursday June 12th 2008, 19:01
And what the hell cedega has anything to do with Wine? READ FAQ about cedega. AND NEVER mention that name here!!!
RE: Error while loading
by Fabrizio on Friday June 13th 2008, 2:51
I mentioned cedega because it is a packed version of wine.I mentioned only fro this and,while I'm here, it's obvious that I would prefer use wine that is opensource...
Mine was only a question,not a flame.

> I mentioned cedega because it is a packed version of wine.
Don't tell anyone this again or they will die laughing. You obviously didn't read FAQ: wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#head-72731b215bbd1ce36e3b84ac7ce114925ce16460
RE: Error while loading
by Fabrizio on Friday June 13th 2008, 14:16
Ok,I've read the FAQ.The question remains....why the same game run correctly on cedega and not in wine?The anserw will never came,I know.
RE: Error while loading
by vitamin on Friday June 13th 2008, 19:19
Then you still didn't understood that Wine's D3D implementation is almost entirely different then the one of cedega.

In either case - upgrade to Wine-1.0-rc5. Psychonauts should be running fine without FBO mode.

Thanks for the guide, though silver is more fair
by HoodedMan on Tuesday December 4th 2007, 16:54
"just no fire or fancy effects which can have occasional gameplay consequences (not knowing when to jump over fire etc.)"

occasional consequences ? You're literally creating a Guy Fawkes here and subjecting your character to immense pain :P

Anyway. Thanks to your description. I'll definitely buy the game as it's gotten brilliant reviews from many (GOOD) game reviewers - And for it to work reasonably under Linux is just great :)

Anyway, you are making a slight mistake. Gold rating is reserved for games that play well without tweaking. As I understand it, you need to change some registry keys (and occasionally switching them to something else entirely!) for it to work. Which means it warrants a silver rating.
RE: Thanks for the guide, though silver is more fair
by Zach Goldberg on Wednesday April 2nd 2008, 16:40
Indeed your comment is well thought out and accurate; and perhaps I should have ranked the game as silver.

However I went with gold because I wanted to get across the opinion that the game really does work and is 100% playable (I beat the game when playing under wine). And I really like the game and am glad to here I caused somebody to buy it :).

So I am the perfect example of why the ranking system needs a bit of an overhaul :) (Currently being discussed on wine-devel)
