What works

What matters, works... just needed a no-cd crack. Barbarian Invasion runs even, haven't started playing that one yet.

There were problems with the video on a battle map. Changing the video options corrected that (I just unchecked "Unit Shaders" from the video settings menu).

While playing on my docked laptop, moving the mouse to the very bottom area of the screen where options such as "Loose Formation" and "Fire At Will" are, causes the game to crash. Playing undocked, everything is fine.

Since I'm using a windowed view, focusing was an issue.  I set the "Allow DirectX apps to stop the mouse leaving their window" and unchecked "Allow the window manager to control the window." Focus back into the game by pressing the left Alt while the mouse in over the game.

The key bindings are impossible to set but the default key layout does work. Does anyone know the complete key bindings?

I also can't get Windows Media Player 9 installed, causes an error when you try to launch it. So I can't view the movie clips at the beginning of any campaign or when I capture a wonder. Has anyone figured this one out?

What does not

Playing without the no-cd crack.

HowTo / Notes

If you have any problems with playing Rome, you should try this:

  1. Use the lowest graphic settings, because one of them crashes the game
  2. Type wine regedit in a terminal. Then go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER / Software / Wine / Direct3D or create it if it doesn't exist. Now you have to add two new keys.DirectDrawRenderer with the string value opengl and VideoMemorySize with the string value of you graphic memory size, for example 512 or 256.

If you want to post a test please write in it, if you have an ATI/AMD,Nvidia,or any other graphic card, because they can cause different problems
