The installation media is available as a retail DVD, a down-loadable trial or it may also be purchased on-line through Steam and the SOE (Sony On-line Entertainment) store as a digital download.
After installation and subscription, the SWG client is patched and updated automatically to the latest chapter by the SOE Station Launcher.

What works
Everything except the stuff mentioned below. The game is very stable.
What does not
Launchpad EULA and embedded news don't show at all or show with errors (can't scroll window and/or overflowing content). Background download setting doesn't work: requires BITS, which doesn't install on Wine. In-game Can't use USB joystick/gamepad in space. Double mouse cursor: displays the SWG's cursor and the X11 cursor. Crackling/skipping sound on loading screens. Can't set antialiasing in Graphics Options, but you can use AA by overriding application setting in you graphics card settings ("nvidia-settings" on nVidia cards). If you change the Gamma setting in Graphics Options, it will not restore to desktop setting when quitting the game. You need to restore it manually (with nVidia cards; "nvidia-settings" -> Color correction). Volumetric shadows don't work.
