I installed the gog.com version of the game which already comes fully patched. When I tried to start the game normally I would get the infamous 'DirectX error DDERR_UNSUPPORTED' message and the game would crash. This is because the game's videos (including the opening cut-scene) use a very old (1996) Intel video codec that no-one supports any more and that cannot be installed in Wine. Here is the work-around to get things going: - Start a Linux terminal. - Type 'wineconsole cmd' without the quotes. This will open Wine's version of a Windows cmd terminal. - In the cmd terminal, type 'c:', then navigate to the directory where you installed the game. - Finally type 'swat.exe -nointro'. This will start the game without triggering the opening cut-scene. As long as you do not do anything to trigger a video you can play all the game's missions and the GOTY Career. Performance on my computer was excellent with a smooth frame-rate, no hiccups, bugs, or crashes (except if I triggered a video). If you are curious to view the videos, you can open them in most video players (VLC works for me).
