What works
Installation from original CDs worked fine with a WINEPREFIX set for Windows XP. In the game sound, intro video, character creation and starting the campaign.
What does not
The cursor was very unresponsive, flickering and needed several clicks to peform click action.
Workarounds
In the registry of the WINEPREFIX under HKCU/Software/Wine/ an new folder was created for Direct3D with a DWORD = 0. This, according to the comments, disables CSMT. After that, the game runs smoothly.

Longer play, mMulti-player, cut scenes.
