Dragon Magazine Archive

This is a 5-CD archive of Dragon Magazine (a magazine for paper RPGs) numbers 1-250. The magazines themselves are stored in PDF format, but the included program has to be used for doing searches, and is Windows-only. I tested on a K6-3/500 running the July 2001 Codeweavers Wine version. The application installs and runs properly, with a few caveats: - It eats CPU while running. I had 100% CPU usage the entire time it was running, whether I was doing anything with it or not. I would guess this has to do with the fancy custom GUI the program uses. - The app is a bit slow. There was a noticeable wait for keypresses to register, and searches took from 2 minutes (for a simple search) to over 5 minutes for a moderately complex query. However, since the magazines are in PDF format, you can do your search, write down results that look interesting, then use a native Linux PDF viewer to look at the results. (Which is a good idea anyways -- even on Windows, the DMA\'s PDF viewer was slow and tended to lock up.) Even with the app being slow and the need to copy down results, it\'s likely to be less annoying than having to boot into Windows just to run this. An update for the program, along with a few magazine inserts which were missing, can be found at: http://www.wizards.com/electronic/article.asp?x=tsr_downloads&c=electronic&sb=electronic

What works

Everything works!

It installs perfectly well, opens up quickly and it even plays sounds.

Searches were also very quick for me.

What does not

Sadly, whenever you wanted to open up a pdf file through the software, it took a relatively long time to open the file and when it got open, it barely moved.

What's weird is that if I opened up one of the pdf files from outside the Dragon Magazine Archive, it didn't show me any problem.

Workarounds

What was not tested

Updating the software is no longer supported, so I couldn't try that.
Also registering is down.
