What works

I launch DOD Source from the interface of Steam. Steam is launched with the command.

WINEPREFIX="/home/vouf/.wine" WINEDEBUG=-all wine "C:Program

FilesSteamsteam.exe". DoD Source work very good in Directx 9 with a 1280x1024 display. To get good fps and picture without defects, you must set this parameters in the video game option :

  • Detail of Shade must be to "Low" else white square appear and disappear randomly.
  • Detail of texture must be to "Middle" else there is problems with reflections (for example in map's anzio, with re-spawn American, the beach is reflected on the sky.
  • Detail of picture must be to "Middle" else there is sometimes problem of colours.

I play this game with OSS. Microphone works good. To getter a better sound select in audio settings of winecfg aNothi bitrate to 44100 Khz and 16 bits .

What does not

  • With wine 0.9.31, when you launch the game, the menu disappear and you have a black or white screen. To resolve this bug, see this bug http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-patches/2007-February/035990.html
  • When teamspeak is launched, there is no sound in DOD Source.
  • Sometimes, a error message appears when you try to launch the game "SteamStartup() : SteamStartup (0xf,0x0034E064) failed with error 1 : the registry is in use by another process, timeout expired" . Close steam and rexecute it, or if you launch Dod Source with the steam interface, retry to launch DODS.

HowTo / Notes

Note

If you would like Day of Defeat: Source to get more attention please vote for it!

So some things I've noticed that you need to get Day of Defeat to run better are:

  • Alsa-drivers (including all librarys and utils) >=1.0.13 (gets rid of weird sounds for me)
    • Also make sure to use the oss driver not the alsa driver. If you exerience weird sound issues using emulation instead of hardware.
  • Graphics driver for Nvidia users >=1.0.8774, ATI users >=8.29.6 (just out of curiousity has anyone with any other graphics card i.e. intel, sis, via, etc...gotten this to work?)
    • The betas from Nvidia work well also.
  • Xorg-x11 >=7.0 (anything less gets a performance hit for some reason (anyone else experience this?)
    • For both of the following make sure these are under the Depth 24. Day of Defeat: Source only plays at 32-bit (Depth 24)
    • For all 4:3 aspect ratios to show up in game, include the following in your xorg.conf:
      • 640x480
      • 800x600
      • 1024x768
      • 1280x1024
      • 1600x1200
    • For all 16:10 aspect ratio to show up in game, include the following in your xorg.conf:
      • 1280x960
      • 1680x1050
      • 1920x1200
  • If you are compiling this from source (like me a gentoo user) I've tested out a bunch of things and recommend the following versions to compile wine:
    • GCC 4.1.1 (latest stable, slightly larger binaries than 3.4.6 but faster nominally)
      • Currently the newest gcc 4.2 snapshot makes the game randomly crash. So I'd hold off on using the new compiler.
    • GLIBC >=2.4
    • Linux headers (gentoo users) or kernel version (everyone else) >=2.6.17
  • Known to run well on all versions after and including 0.9.23.

FAQ:

Q: It seems that dod source works once steam as been installed as it is said in the steam section. But once dod is launched, steam stays in focus and obstruct the screen. When I try to lower the steam window, everything freezes and I must reboot the PC, the keyboard is not responding!
Whats going on?

A: One of the known bugs with steam is that it always is on top and cannot be minimized, or else the system crashes. So if the steam window is still on your screen when you start your game, simply X out of it instead of trying to minimize it.
