Selected Test Results

What works

Installation via Winetricks. HTML, JavaScript, CSS as on Windows. Toolbar and menu buttons. Normal installation works if the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->Software->Microsoft->Internet Explorer->Version is set to a value lower than 6 (forr instance, 5.0), but the app is unusable in this condition. Flash. Mouse pointer visible and works, unlike previous Wine releases. HTTPS appears to work.

What does not

Flash renders badly (animation works, but parts are missing). Sometimes the panels for Search/Favorites/Media do not appear, nut render on second attempt. Does not install an entry in the Wine Program menu. Installation by installer EXE.

Workarounds

What was not tested

Silverlight, Java, ActiveX.

Additional Comments

Perfectly usable for testing standards-based websites for use on IE6, which should be the only reason anyone ever installs IE6 on Wine.

HowTo / Notes

HOWTO
Winetricks Installation

The best way to install IE 6 is to use winetricks!

  1. Download winetricks
    wget http://kegel.com/wine/winetricks
  2. Let winetricks install IE6
    WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=~/.wine_ie6 sh winetricks -q ie6
  3. Start IE
    WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=~/.wine_ie6 wine ~/.wine_ie6/drive_c/Program\ Files/Internet\ Explorer/IEXPLORE.EXE

WARNING

This note was originally added to IE Version 5, but may be relevant to all versions.

Don't run IE on an RW mounted DOS partition !
Pretty problematic directory renaming/corruption can happen.
This seems to happen if Wine doesn't have access to certain Windows registry keys.
Renames e.g. "Program Files" to "$!$!$!$!.pfr" and does other horrible things.
BTW, it does not only happen with IE, as it seems to be a generic Windows Setup process of Explorer which is doing this, which can be launched under multiple circumstances.
To be safe, use a backup copy only, i.e. copy all relevant windows files over e.g. to an ext2 partition.

NOTE

If you are using IEs4linux, please report all bugs to ie4linux's creators.
