Half-Life

This is the artfully balanced first-person shooter/real-time strategy hybrid based on the original Half-Life engine.

Two player teams, one consisting of marines and one consisting of aliens, battle for control of a map and to eliminate the opposing team. The marine team is based around a central commander who views the game from a top-down view and manages his team's strategy and resources. The alien team shares what is visible for all alien members amongst teammates and has instantaneous communication of combat alerts to all team members.

This is the latest version as of 2 March, 2007.

What works

Installation works without a problem

Gameplay works, with some issues

What does not

Outoing voice communication is problematic, as is also the case for other Half-Life engine multiplayer games.

There is no graphical corruption, but performance takes a heavy hit, making it necessary to turn detail levels and resolution down unless you have a lot of CPU to spare.

Sometimes sound effects are corrupted and played at half their proper sampling rate, making everything sound very low in pitch and rendering voice communication unintelligible.

It is necessary to use the OSS sound driver to avoid slowdowns and audio stuttering.

Additional Comments

The problems with this are, really, the problems that any other Half-Life engine mod has. Make sure to run the game with the OpenGL renderer. Use the OSS sound driver to avoid sound errors. This game is, basically, completely playable once you get it running.
