Using: - Ubuntu 10.4 (with Wine 1.2 from the Respositories) - Original CD (NoCD patch is NOT needed to play the game - just mount the CD/ISO to install then you can play without it) - Tried with both native and built-in libraries for Direct 3d (DX9), dmusic32, dsound - Windows 2000 compatibility (should work with Win98 too because back than I played it on 98) Though I haven't tried multiplayer, I give it Gold-rating because singleplayer works without a single problem (sound problem (see in Extra comments) can be solved). In short: - sound works - no in-game video problems - no lag (see my configuration in the Extra comments)
What does not
When exiting the game, the game crashes with following message: The program ST.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close.
What was not tested
Multiplayer, Videos (cutscenes, intro)
NO SOUND: Symptoms: When you start the game, there is sound while in the menu. The moment you start a game (campaign, tutorial, skirmish) there is no sound - both music and sound effects. Then, when you get back to the menu, there is no sound there too. Possible solution: 1)Try choosing different audio drivers (ALSA, OSS, Jack etc.). 2)If 1) doesn't work (like in my case) also make sure that Wine's using emulated hardware acceleration for the DirectSound. This solved my problem. Might work for you too. MY CONFIGURATION: - Intel Core Duo Txxx 1.66GHz - Realtek-compatible integrated sound card - Nvidia GeForce 7300 Go (with propriety drivers) - 2GB RAM - All settings in the game are on max
