What works
Installer will run and install from CD but gets some errors at the end that do not appear to affect game play. The game will start (with a mouse click on black screen) and then the user can walk through the game setup options to have a game start. Basic game play and most of the menu options appear to work correctly, was able to save, load, move, build city, do all game options that do not require a CD.
What does not
The installer will put up a "instructions" box that must be closed by clicking on the X in the upper right hand corner to continue the installation. wine d:/setup.exe runs to completion but the wine process does not exit; it repeats the following 3 times then puts up a GUI error box: err:ntdll:RtlpWaitForCriticalSection section 0x7efec5e4 "loader.c: loader_section" wait timed out in thread 0025, blocked by 0024, retrying (60 sec) wine: Critical section 7eaa3ca0 wait failed at address 0x7ef7a133 (thread 0023), starting debugger... Error Box states: "The program winevdm.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close...." Clicking close will close the box and wine exits. Running civ2 (wine civ2.exe) will display a black screen (and seem to freeze), but clicking anywhere on the screen will result in the game startup screen appearing. The option "Pick Music" from the main menu will tell you that the CD has not been found. I have confirmed that the CD is there (installed from it) but Civ2 is not finding it. The Music and heralds are not working (Music fails because it can't find the CD) but the heralds just shows up with black spaces where the "heralds" faces would normally show; it also moves blocks around so reading the heralds comments is difficult. Civilopedia options resulted in a crash in winevdm.exe
Workarounds
What was not tested
Game ending. Spaceship. Civilopedia. Music. And CD options. The test to continue (copy protection).

Additional Comments
Not having the CD work may mean some of the "problems" above were because of the CD and not the game itself. I will see what I can do to test the CD another time.

I can no longer locate any official patches or the microprose website, but I managed to find patches here
